Mechanical Design Engineer I
Rubbercraft is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer I to join our organization and support the design, development, and testing of elastomeric components and precision mechanical systems. This entry-level role is ideal for engineers passionate about mechanical design, materials science, and advanced manufacturing. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of senior engineers on custom-engineered solutions for industries requiring high-performance seals and elastomeric components.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
As a Mechanical Design Engineer I, you will support the development and optimization of elastomeric components and sealing solutions for aerospace and defense applications. This position involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, learning engineering processes, and assisting in design activities under supervision.
1. Mechanical Design & Development
- Assist in the design and development of elastomeric components, seals, and polymer-based solutions for aerospace and defense applications.
- Create 3D CAD models, technical drawings, and engineering documentation using SolidWorks and/or CATIA in 3DX PLM (ENOVIA).
- Support the design of basic process, test, and check fixtures, including use of 3D printing technology.
- Assist in design optimization for manufacturability, durability, and cost-efficiency.
- Support testing activities and data collection for design validation.
2. Documentation & Compliance
- Assist in preparation of engineering documentation, reports, and test plans.
- Follow established quality procedures and engineering standards (e.g., AS9100, ISO 9001) under guidance.
- Support compliance activities and documentation updates as directed.
- Assist with maintaining engineering records and material data.
3. Collaboration & Support
- Work with manufacturing, quality, and lab teams to support transition of designs from concept to production.
- Assist in prototype development, validation testing, and troubleshooting activities.
- Support Engineering Department requests and participate in team meetings as needed.
- Collaborate with internal teams to understand design requirements and project objectives.
4. Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and lean engineering activities.
- Assist in researching materials, processes, and technologies related to elastomeric products.
- Stay engaged in learning industry best practices and engineering fundamentals.
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- 0–3 year of experience (internships or co-op experience acceptable).
- Exposure to mechanical design, elastomers, or manufacturing processes is a plus.
Skills / Qualifications
1. Technical Skills
- Basic proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks and/or CATIA).
- Introductory understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5 preferred).
- Basic familiarity with manufacturing processes such as rubber molding, machining, or additive manufacturing.
- General understanding of engineering materials (elastomers and polymers preferred).
2. Soft Skills
- Strong willingness to learn and develop technical skills.
- Good problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage assigned tasks.
3. Preferred (Not Required)
- Exposure to aerospace standards (FAA, AS9100, MIL-SPEC).
- Familiarity with FEA concepts or coursework (hands-on experience not required).
- Internship or academic experience with elastomers, seals, or mechanical systems.
- Exposure to PLM systems (e.g., 3DX/ENOVIA) is a plus.
